St James is a sleepy suburb, removed from the hustle of Victoria Park. Still less than 10km to Perth CBD, it offers the best of both worlds — without the big prices. Property is more affordable than nearby suburbs like Victoria Park, so it’s great for renters and also a good starting point if thinking about investing in property. Straddling Town of Victoria Park and City of Canning council areas, St James is clean and green with established trees along most streets and some choice parks. Bordered by Albany Highway and Welshpool Road, it’s mainly a residential area but you’ll find a few hidden gems, such as small restaurants and takeaway joints, spotted around the neighbourhood. If you’re after a bit more nightlife, the Albany Highway café strip is walk away and public transport is a breeze, with plenty of bus stops and Bentley train station nearby. Close to schools (for both big and little kids) and Curtin University, St James attracts students and young families although there are also retirees that bought early and set up house in the area. There are plenty of new homes and townhouses popping up, spotted between old character homes with big backyards — great for the dog and kids to play.
There’s a bit of history to the area, too. It was first settled in 1842 and by the 1950’s, new roads and housing were constructed. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that the population boomed, making it the suburb it is today. Here’s a fun fact — St James is named after St James’s Park, near Buckingham Palace in London, and many of the streets get their names from prime ministers and members of parliament.
